Correct Adoption Language

Updated: Sep 23, 2019

It is very important to use the correct adoption language when talking about adoption to anyone in the adoption triad. Below is a chart that compares the wrong wording and the correct wording.

Word choice is important no matter what you are speaking about, but in adoption it is important because it helps each member feel valued. When a woman makes the choice to place her it is selfless and she should be honored. Using the phrase "putting up for adoption" devalues the choice she made by "placing her child for adoption." The phrase "putting up for adoption" came from orphan trains in the 1800's, when homeless children were put on trains and landowners could select them and they became the landowner's property. This is very different than what adoption is today. This is just one of the many examples as to why word choice is important in the adoption community.
